Displaying the user name in SharePoint 2003

I was searching for a web part/method, which would allow me to display the currently logged in user name on SharePoint 2003 portal’s front page. Because, SharePoint 2003 does not have an inbuilt feature to show the current user name. I had to look for some work around. After googling for some time, I got a link to a SharePoint article Howto: Display the Username for the Logged on user on a page. This article explains a trick using Data view web part and some Conditional formatting codes.

But later, after more and more googling, I came to know about a web part which bundles the functionality I wanted. It is the Hello Web Part from Bamboo Solutions. This ones comes free and works really well. I just needed to install the web part and add it to the front page. No coding/editing web files. Here is from the web part home page, about this web part:

Welcome users to your portal by displaying a personal welcome message that includes the user’s name. The Hello Web Part features a standard message which changes depending on the time of day. Example: “Good Afternoon, Mary Jones”

There are lot more functionalities I need to add to my SharePoint portal. The important one is getting the user input using a Form and storing the input to a database. Looking for custom made web parts for this one. Will update the links and resources here once I found it out.
