Recently, when I was surfing through my blog visitor statistics, I found that the search engine visitors for the article Implementing Ajax in Java web application using JQuery, has been dropped significantly. I was wondering why it happened and tried to search in Google for the related keywords, which usually lists my article on the first page of the search results. But, I was surprised to see that another site was listed with my article in it. When I checked their website, they published my article as-it-is, without even asking me for permission.
But in an open media like blogs, these things are unavoidable, as long as browser supports text selection and copy functions!
Later, I was googling for any ways to stop my contents being copied. As far as I know, there are two services available (for free) which may not stop the copying,, but to show a notification to your blog readers saying that the content is copyrighted and if the user wants to use your content, proper attribution must be given.
Licensing your work under creative commons license:
Creative Commons is a non profit organization that helps you to license your work, so that you can keep your copyright, while letting others to use your work and give credits to you. Apart from this licensing, the site also provides search engine tool for searching CC licensed works.
I’ve licensed my works under Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative, which lets the user to use my work, with out modification and giving proper credits back to me. Apart from this license, there are other licenses also available, which you can choose based on your need.
Search for copies of your page on the web:
The other copyright-protection service available is – Copyscape. It’s a search engine, searches the web for the pages that are similar to your pages. The site provides a badge for warning the users not to copy the content, which you can place it on your website. Copyscape also has a premium version of its service for $0.05 per search. I’ve not tried that, so I’m not sure how well the search is.
Finally…
Even though both services provide some measures to warn the users not to copy, it will not stop the someone who will anyway ignore all these license warnings and will copy the content. But doing this license thing, will at least make ourself contented that we did something to protect our content!
What are all the techniques that you use to protect your content online?

Hi Rekha,
It is really unfortunate that your blog content is being copied. But we need to admit that copying is unstoppable in an open medium such as blogs. In such scenarios, you can try doing below:
1. Email the blogger who copied your content, asking him to take down the copied page.
2. Email search engines (Google, bing) with some proofs, asking to remove the copy blogger enties from being indexed.
but whatever the preventive measures are, it’s tough to stop the copycats.
