Bhuvan – India’s GeoMapping online Portal [Screenshots]

On the occasion of our 62nd Independence Day Celebration, Indians have yet another reason to be proud of. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched Bhuvan, a free online service for geo-mapping, for better rural planning and visualisation. This service makes use of the iamges taken from the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite.

How to use Bhuvan?

  1. First, you need to register with Bhuvan website.
  2. Then, you need to download Bhuvan Plug-in and install it in your machine. The total size of this installable is around 11 MB (the recommended version of the plug-in).
  3. Once you done with the above two steps, then you are good to access the Buvan geoportal. After you log-in, the portal directly takes you to the india map.

Some good things about Bhuvan:

  1. First of all, the service is designed to work well even in low bandwidth internet connection, which is very common in India.
  2. It provides the navigation controls for zooming in/out, tiliting the map,  etc. You can also use mouse for navigating the map. The Heads-up-display (HUD) control design is very cool.
  3. Bhuvan gives several in-built layers such as Transportation, Rivers which you can select and see on the map.
  4. Shadow Analysis – allows you to turn-on the shadows on the map based on the time of the day. Interesting.
