Tales from Mangalore – The Coastal City of Karnataka

I’m back from my one month trip to Mangalore – the coastal city of Karnataka state. The trip was official one, went there for attending one training program. I was looking forward to visit Mangalore, since it was my first time to visit this place. Mangalore is situated on the coastal of Arabian sea. So, the train journey was exciting, as one side was full of sea and the other side was the dense forest area of Kerala.

It was the monsoon time, when I went there. So, it was raining everywhere. Once it started to rain in the morning and the sky continued to pour all day long. The same is the case for that entire week. Sometimes it’s good to see rain when it just rains for say 1 or 2 hours. But 24/7 service is little too much, rain God! :P

Apart from the rain, there is one more experience that I want to share here. It’s the bus ride. Mangalore (in fact, most of the Metro cities) has several private bus operators, whose only motto is to stuff as much people as possible in the small bus and then race with the other bus drivers in the road. They call this as public transport service. It’s all like the Need For Speed – Street Race with the one exception that you (as well as the other poor souls a.k.a fellow travelers) need to buy tickets to be part of the game. Btw, there is no seat belt for anyone in the bus, though.

On the Food, I really had a tough time to find south Indian dishes. Even though the Sambar was available, it tasted very sweet. I heard that Kannadigas usually add sugar to Sambar and other dishes. I won’t like to have the sweet Sambar in the close perimeter of my existence. So, I’d to switch to north Indian dishes, just to avoid that Sambar. Other than this, the food was awesome. Especially the fish food. No wonder in it, because Mangalore is the coastal area, the fish food has to be good. And the sweets are also very special. Got to see sweet stalls everwhere in the city.

The one month flown away just like that. Didn’t get much time to explore the Mangalore city. If I get a chance, I would like to visit the city once again. Till then, have to stay in the God’s Country – Kerala.

Here bus drivers call their buses as “Parachute time” :p due to their speed and hustle on the roads with their rival bus drivers.
