Recently, Twitter has announced a deal with Bharti Airtel, which will allow the users of Airtel network to tweet through SMS. No doubt that this deal will increase the Twitter’s presence in India market. Mainly because, we, Indians, are not yet used to the high-speed internet access and mobile is still the greater medium than the web. So, this will give Twitter a huge push on the Indian markets.
Here, I’ll share what you need to do in order to use Twitter in your Airtel mobile.
Tweeting with Airtel Mobile Connection:
- Get a Twitter Account first.
- Register your mobile number with your Twitter account – Goto Twitter -> Settings -> Devices and add your Airtel mobile number.
- Verify your mobile number by sending the verification code, shown on the above Devices page to the number 53000.
- After your code is verified, you are good to go. Just when you want to tweet, send your message as a SMS to 53000.
That’s it. Just four simple steps to start tweeting from your mobile via Airtel connection. Please note that even though it doesn’t cost you anything to receive tweets in your mobile, the standards SMS rates are applicable for sending your tweets.
BTW, in case you didn’t know before, I’m i twitter at @vraa, where you can follow me.

If you want to receive your friend’s tweet as an SMS, you first need to go to their profile page in twitter. There you’ll see an ‘mobile phone’ icon near to the ‘Following’ label. Click on that icon to start receiving that persons tweets directly to your mobile.

As of now I don’t know how to receive these tweets as SMS. When I get a direct message, that comes to me as SMS, but when someone mention my twitter handle, that’s not coming to my mobile. Even I’m in a need of this feature.
