Facebook - Our Digital Identity on Web
We all use social networking sites. Some people use them for catching up with their friends, some for business and some for just to be part of the social network. Whatever may be the reason, we all have a account in at least one of the social networking sites out there. We make friends, we share what we are doing, we upload our photos, we discuss about movies and other stuffs – simply, we put our data in those social networking sites. In other words, the data you put on these social networking sites (or anywhere in the web) is your digital identity. Its YOU in the web. Your friend might be able to identify you with your Facebook user name or avatar. That’s the identity you create using these social networking sites.
As per the Facebook’s statistics page, there are around 350 million active users sign into Facebook everyday. And 35 million users update their status each day in Facebook. I’m sure that most of these users might have an account in other social sites, such as Twitter. So, what happen to your data when you go to one social site to other? Can you take your friends data with you when you go to Twitter from Facebook? Can you find all your Gmail contacts in MySpace?
Social Networks are like Entertainment Malls
Social networking sites are like your local entertainment malls. You hang out in one place with your friends. And when you go to a new mall, you should be able to find your old friends there easily. Here, only the mall has changed not your friends list. Similarly, when you move to one social network to other, your should be able to find your old friends, there too. You should be able to take your friends data (along with yours), to any social network you use.
Facebook + Yahoo = Share your Digital Identity!
Recently, Yahoo announced that you could share your Facebook data across Yahoo!’s properties.
We have good news to share with everyone who uses Yahoo! and Facebook – in the first half of 2010 we will open the door between two of the Internet’s largest online communities. You will be able to see your Facebook friends’ activities on Yahoo! and share Yahoo! content – ratings, photos, article comments, and more – directly on your Facebook stream.
Using Facebook Connect, Yahoo! makes it possible to share your digital identity across the two BIG networks. Facebook is the most popular (still growing) social site and Yahoo! still accounts for a huge amount of web traffic.
When these two giants share their user data with one another, it just makes the end user’s online life a little easy. You do not need to search for your friend in Facebook! who you saw on Yahoo!. Your friends data will just come right at your Facebook stream. This helps to increase the data integration and the reach of your digital identity.
So, next time, when you see your Yahoo! friend on Facebook, don’t be surprised!
