Regional font support in Opera Mini

August 31, 2010 · 91 comments

If you are using your Opera Mini mobile browser to access regional websites, you might have faced this issue. Instead of seeing the proper regional content (in my case, its Tamil), you might have seen boxes all over there in that tiny mobile screen. This is because, by default, Opera Mini browser couldn’t be able to render the complex scripts, i.e. regional fonts.

So, to enable the regional (Tamil or Telugu or you name it!) language in Opera Mini browser,

  1. Open the address about:config in your opera mini browser. This will open the browser’s option page.
  2. Scroll down until you see something like this: Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts.
  3. Set the above option value to yes and then click on Save button.

That’s it. Now you’ll be able to enjoy the local content from your Opera Mini browser.

Technicalities:

All the web traffic from Opera Mini browser goes through Opera’s proxy servers, which optimize the web content for mobile experience. As I said above, Opera Mini does not have the capability to render complex scripts in mobile. So, by setting the above option, we are letting the Opera’s proxy servers to render the complex scripts as images and send those images to mobile browser. Thus you’ll see the regional content as images, instead of fonts.

PS: came to know about this tip when I met the Tamil tweeters on last Sunday. Thanks to them for sharing this info.

CSS also provide a trick to install the font who located at server temporary or permanently. css script look like

@font-face {font-family: “mildly-funky”; src:url(“http://
http://www.funky-fonts-are-us.com/newfonts/mild-funky“); font-style:
normal, italic;}
body {font-family: “mildly-funky”, normal}
h1 {font-family: “mildly-funky”, italic}

you are talking about the CSS3 feature for web fonts. To make this work, the server side code needs to be edited.

What I mentioned in my post was somewhat different problem. Its about displaying the complex scripts. Even if you download the complex fonts using the method you mentioned, Opera mini still won’t show the font, I believe. So, to make it work, the bitmap option needs to be enabled.

Hi Veera,

I use Opera 10 in Nokia expressmusic 5800. I couldn’t able to see the option mentioned in your blog. I did search through the available options but with no luck. Will update you in case I find something.

Regards
Prem

Veera September 1, 2010 at 11:46 AM

may be because the above option works only in Opera *mini* browser and not in the normal Opera browser.

Prem Anandh P. September 2, 2010 at 4:03 PM

What I mentioned is for Opera *mini* browser only. That *mini* is specific for mobiles I guess :)

Veera September 2, 2010 at 5:07 PM

yeah. but got confused with the version number you mentioned. because Opera’s desktop version is 10. :)

and, guess what’s the version before Opera Mobile 10? It’s not Opera 9.. its Opera 5. that’s why i thought of desktop version when you said Opera 10!

Opera have two browsers for mobile. 1. Opera mobile 2. Opera Mini
The above mentioned options only available in opera mini. not in opera mobile browser.

This post explains with screenshots View Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam Fonts in Opera Mini

If you have nokia n900 mobile… you can install .ttf fonts to that mobile like PC. You can input in your language too.

I have Nokia5800 and the option is working but you have to download opera mini 5.1 it has the “Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts” option not in the mini 10.1

Reply

Veera December 6, 2010 at 10:13 AM

yes. Opera Mini 10.1 does not have the bitmap option. I don’t know whether the browser itself supports the Tamil font rendering or not. It should, otherwise there won’t be any way to read the regional content.

do not prefix it with http. just type “about:config” in URL bar. then you won’t be getting this error.

I have a question

how the “Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts” affected on a traffic?
or the bitmap picture is also optimized for minimizing the traffic?

for example… how many bits would be the following message after ‘bitmapisation’ ?
“??????? ??????? ????????? ?? ??????????? ? ???????????? ?????? ??? ?? ????? ???? ??????????? ????????? 10 ?????????? ???? ????????”
