
When you delete every records from a table, which has an AUTO Increment ID field, the *delete* option will not reset the* Auto Increment *number. For example, if the table had 5 rows, and you deleted all the rows (either one by one or through _delete from tablename where 1;_), and then if you insert a new row, it will get a ID value as **6 **not as **1**. Because the auto increment value is not reset.

The easiest way to reset the auto increment number is to use the query **truncate tablename; **which removes all the rows from that table and resets the auto increment back to 1.

But if you want to do it visually, phpMyAdmin provides options for that:

1.  In phpMyAdmin, open the table for which you want to reset the auto increment number.
2.  Then go to: **Operations -> Table Options. **
3.  Reset the **AUTO_INCREMENT **field to whichever value you want and save the changes.

That's it. The next time, when you insert new records, they will start from the auto increment number you set above.


How to reset Auto Increment back to 1 in XAMPP MySQL using phpMyAdmin


Recently I got hold of an empty Rackspace server in which we have installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal version. My next step was to setup the LAMP stack in that server to run our PHP site.

First I tried to install XAMPP for Linux. But unfortunately, it failed because XAMPP only supports 32 bit operating system and ours was 64. I didn't want to spend much time on fixing that issue, so I moved to setup the LAMP stack by other means.

Here's what I did (after googling/referring a lot):

## 1.Install lamp-server

1.  **sudo apt-get install tasksel **[installs the tasksel that helps you to install multiple packages as a single task]
2.  **sudo tasksel install lamp-server **[it will install the lamp stack in location */etc/*]
3.  *http://yourdomain.com *should work now.

## 2. Configure PHP Curl module

1.  **sudo apt-get install php5-curl **[downloads and installs curl module]
2.  **sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart** [restarts server for the changes to take effect]

## 3. Install phpmyadmin

1.  **sudo apt-get update **[updates the packages repository. When I first tried to install phpmyadmin without updating, it complained that phpmyadmin isn't found.]
2.  **sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin **[will trigger a installation wizard]
3.  Choose **apache2 **for the **server configuration** and choose **no **for **database configuration **(since we have already installed database).
4.  **sudo cp /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf /etc/apache2/conf.d **[copies the server configuration so that it is accessible via web]
5.  **sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart**
6.  *http://yourdomain.com/phpmyadmin* should work now.

That's it. Now our server is ready for serving the traffic. Place your website files under **/var/www/ **which will be served to the world.


Easy way for setting up the LAMP stack in Ubuntu Linux command line


By default, when you install XAMPP in your windows machine, the `root` password for the MySQL is set to empty. But this is not recommended, as the MySQL database without a password will be accessible to everyone. To avoid this, a proper/secure password must be set to the user `root`. To do it in XAMPP, there are two ways.

## Method 1: reset XAMPP MySQL root password through web interface:

After you started your XAMPP server, go to the browser and type the URL **http://localhost/security/** (incase you've [modified XAMPP server port][1], you need to include that port number also in previous URL). The security page will be shown where you can change the `root` password for MySQL. This will update the phpMyAdmin config also.

## Method 2: reset XAMPP MySQL root password through SQL update:

1.  Start the Apache Server and MySQL instances from the XAMPP control panel.
2.  After the server started, open any web browser and give **http://localhost:8090/phpmyadmin/** (if you are running XAMPP on 8090 port). This will open the phpMyAdmin interface. Using this interface we can manager the MySQL server from the web browser.
3.  In the phpMyAdmin window, select _SQL_ tab from the right panel. This will open the SQL tab where we can run the SQL queries.
4.  Now type the following query in the textarea and click **Go**  
    `UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('password') WHERE User='root'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;`
5.  Now you will see a message saying that the query has been executed successfully.
6.  If you refresh the page, you will be getting a error message. This is because the phpMyAdmin configuration file is not aware of our newly set root passoword. To do this we have to modify the phpMyAdmin config file.
7.  Open the file **[XAMPP Installation Path] / phpmyadmin / config.inc.php** in your favorite text editor.
8.  Search for the string `$cfg\['Servers'\]\[$i\]['password'] = '';` and change it to like this, `$cfg\['Servers'\]\[$i\]['password'] = 'password';` Here the 'password' is what we set to the `root` user using the SQL query.
9.  Now all set to go. Save the config.inc.php file and restart the XAMPP server.


This article explains how to change the MySQL root password in XAMPP for windows. When you install XAMPP, the default root password for MySQL would be empty, which is not recommended.
