Last weekend, the first item on my TODO list was to setup a desktop PC. I had decided on the PC configuration long back ago, but didn’t actually set it up. Because that time I was in Trivandrum, where the PC accessories might cost a bit higher. I was holding that plan till I move to Chennai. After I moved to Chennai, last Saturday I got some free time to get the things ready.
In Chennai, there’s a place called Ritchie street where you can get almost everything that is related electronics. Starting from the transistors, diodes, computer parts, laptops to whatever that has some electrons flowing through it. At some shops you can even get your final year engineering projects done for cheap rate! But you need to go to a trusted shop otherwise you’ll end up with a defective product.
That is where I went to buy a new desktop. After searching in few stores, I was surprised to see a laptop that came so closer or even beats my decided configuration. Surprisingly the laptop cost was much lesser than my expectation. So, immediately I changed my mind to go for it instead of desktop. That’s how I ended up with buying the Acer Aspire 5738Z:

The configuration: Intel Pentium processor 2.2 GHz, 15.6 HD LCD screen, 3GB memory, 320 GB Hard disk, DVD Drive, Bluetooth, Card reader, Finger print scanner and few extra things! And the total price comes to RS 26, 800/- Good deal, isn’t it?
Btw, this post is written and published from my new laptop!

This is definitely a good deal. Congrats.
What is the processor series?
Thank you JB!
The processor is based on Intel Core 2 series with 2.2 GHz speed and 800 MHz FSB.
Timely post Veera… I am looking for a laptop upto my taste!!!
thanks Kesav!
I think you must be willing to buy a Studio laptop!
you are right Veera! But not yet freezed my decision…
Yeahh, it’s a good deal. What about the OS???
The model I bought came with a Linux OS (only command line, no GUI). There’s another model with same configuration and Windows 7 Home edition was available, but the cost was 29K. So, I didn’t go for that option.
Now I have Windows XP in my new machine and planning to install Ubuntu as a dual boot.
Good deal! I had bought Acer 4520 (160 GB hard disk, 2GB RAM) for almost 5,000 bucks more, though that was two years ago
I’ve often heard that Acer’s support is not as good as Dell, but I’ve never needed the support — the laptop has *never* crashed till date (though I must admit that I used it rigorously only for about an year; after joining MBA, I spent most of my time on the college-provided Dell Vostro and the Acer 4520 is just a playtool).
// Acer never needed the support //
I’ll second that. Because my first laptop was Acer and I had been using that for close to three years. I never had any issues with my laptop *hardware*. Based on that solid experience, I decided to go for Acer again.
Its a great price in INR.
Whats is the L2 Cache? It has camera? And which operating system you decided to use on it?
Thank you, Tahir!
L2 Cache : 1MB. It has a inbuilt web camera on top of the screen (the picture quality is awesome, even in dark light).
The Lapop came with Linpus operating system. I erased it and installed Windows XP. Planning to dual book Ubuntu also, but not sure how well Ubuntu can handle the laptop.
