
The news is, I have left PayPal last week, and joined ThoughtWorks as an UI developer.

I have been associated with PayPal for almost 3 years (with 3 months break in between) and without a doubt, that experience had taught me some valuable lessons. But, lately, I have started focusing heavily on JavaScript and I decided to part ways with PayPal to get myself into a work that has scope for JavaScript development.

So, I picked ThoughtWorks (err, they picked me!).

ThoughtWorks is a well known software development company amongst the developer community here, known for their contribution to **Agile practice, Selenium & CruiseControl**. Having heard good feedback about ThoughtWorks from the community & my ex-colleagues at PayPal, I was really looking forward to join the company.

Now, it's been 2 days (just) and the kind of culture I see at ThoughtWorks is something that I have never seen at my previous work places. To start, there are no cubicles. Everyone sit around tables (including Managers, GMs) and one can move to any place as their project demands. There's no fixed location, as such. As someone who alyways had a _cubicle number_ given to him, the cubicle-less arrangement is a new experience to me.

I think I'll cut out here, as it's been just 2 days since I started working at ThoughtWorks. I'll try to write more as the time goes by.

The last time when I wrote a similar post was when I [moved from Infosys to CSC](https://veerasundar.com/blog/moved-to-chennai-india/). But now, that photo makes more sense as the ThoughtWorks campus is located very near to that road. So, as an end note, here's that photo for you.

Here's a small UNIX tip (or how-to) for executing a command in the background. For UNIX gurus, this tip might seem like a basic one. But for guys like me who are coming from a Windows background, even smaller ones makes a big difference.

This is the scenario - I use Putty to login to UNIX. I execute few (internal) UNIX commands which are time thirtsy and take at least 2 hours to complete. While the command is running, I can't do anything in the Putty terminal. All I can do is stare the Putty for 2 hours or do the below, to reuse the Putty session for other tasks while running the time-thirsty command in the background.

- In UNIX shell, type your command and hit Enter.
  $ my-long-running-command
  ...... the long-running command running .....

- Your command will start running. Now press `Ctrl z`. This will interrupt the current process and pauses it. You'll see something like this;
  [1] Stopped my-long-running-command

- Now , type `bg` and hit Enter. Your current process (i.e. the command) will start running in the background. To check, type `jobs` in the command line and hit Enter. You'll see the job status something like this.
  $ bg
  [1] my-long-running-command
  $jobs
  [1]- Running my-long-running-command

So, now you can use Putty for other tasks, while your command executes in the background.

It has been several days since I posted anything in this blog. Well, there was a reason for that - I quit [Infosys][1] and joined [CSC][2]. For that I had to move to [Chennai][3] and it took my last two weekends for the relocation and settling in. Didn't get much time to put something together and write here.

I do not want to elaborate more on quitting Infosys. It was a decision that I had to take because of several reasons and I had moved out of Infosys on February 26, where I spent 3 quality years.  My current position at CSC gives me ample opportunities to grow in the field where I actually want to be in.

On moving to Chennai, it gives me a feeling that I am back at my home. Chennai is not a new place to me. I spent 4 years here, doing my studies at a local college. Because of my previous job, I had to stay away from Chennai for the past 3 and half years and now I'm back. The ways that the city has changed in these 3 years were amazed me. But the main problems of the city - traffic, pollution, weather and water - are still here. I hope the city gets better and better in the coming days.

According to you, **what does it take to make a good developer resume?** I'm not talking about the skills and experience part. Assume that you have enough skills to fill up an entire page and some experience too. My question is about how you present this data in your resume. To summarize, **I need your thoughts** on the below questions about a developer's resume:

1.  Do you prefer a single page resume or multi-page? If multi, then how many pages of resume you think is good enough to sell you?
2.  Do you elaborate on your work experience (like, job description, responsibilities, etc.) or you want to keep it short?
3.  Do you have more than one resume - like a master one with all details and one page resume targeted to a particular position?
4.  In what order you present information in the resume: Objective, Experience, Skills, Education, Summary?
5.  Do you really think the resume layout matters more than the content itself?
6.  Which font do you use for your resume? Arial?  Verdana?  Webdings?
7.  Do you prefer to maintain an online version of your resume?
